Prakrti (pronounced Pra KR Tee -- sometimes spelled pakriti) is often translated as 'body-type' but actually means 'nature'.
It's a wonderful concept when applied artfully and kindly. At other times it just increases confusion and unhealthy constraints around diet and lifestyle choices.
Many people have heard of Vata, Pitta and Kapha Prakrti as the three 'bodytypes' but Ayurveda names seven main Prakrti - Vata, Pitta, Kapha, VataPitta, VataKapha, PittaKapha and VataPittaKapha.
Vata, Pitta and Kapha (to move; to burn; to hydrate) are all a combination of the Five Elements:
Vata - Ether and Wind (movement through space)
Pitta - Fire and Water (dynamic transformation)
Kapha - Water and Earth (hydrate/oil/hug)
Rather than thinking of each body fitting into seven archetypes, Ayurveda invites us to view and treat our body as being entirely different from everyone else's and completely individual in how it has come to house the Five Elements... and how those Five Elements burst into action in YOUR body (Vata, Pitta, Kapha Dosha).
Yes, you might fit the broad, sweeping strokes of a VataPitta Prakrti or a PittaKapha Prakrti and you can gain some initial insights by looking at lists of food and lifestyle for these body-types BUT which foods really encourage optimum health for you, which lifestyle suits you is highly individual to just you and requires self study and self care and time. But mostly self-love!
You can pick from 1000's of Prakrti questionnaires online and find all the diet and lifestyle recommendations for that Prakrti online -- but always use this as a kicking off point and always listen to your body when (and after) you make any changes rather than the printed page. (really, most remedial recommendations would be made around Vkrti but that's a subject for another day).
Ayurveda, like Yoga, is a daily practice of inquisitiveness, compassion, mindfulness and curiosity! A mix of Yoga and Ayurveda can be found both on the mat and in our daily activities.
